A pearl is the result of sand or stone rubbing against the soft body of a mollusk. In an attempt to neutralize the irritation, the sea creature coats and surrounds the offending particle with many layers of natural minerals and proteins. These layers are referred to as nacre (nay-ker.) More and more layers follow, until a luminous pearl is formed.
Natural pearls are so rare to find in nature that most pearls sold today are cultured. To create a cultured pearl, a tiny bead is implanted into the oyster as the initial irritant, and gradually over time the oyster coats the bead in nacre to produce a perfect pearl.
Their birth-like origin is why pearls are considered gems of nurturing and nourishment. That’s why it’s no surprise that pearls have a centuries-long reputation for their healing properties, especially in traditional Asian medical systems.
Pearl powder has been used externally to whiten skin and combat acne and other skin conditions. Rich in calcium, magnesium, iron, silica, and amino acids, ingesting pearl powder can help maintain strong bones and teeth and even help prevent osteoporosis. Taking pearl powder internally may even help support mood stability with its soothing and calming nature. This gem can help address mental uneasiness, nervousness, anxiety, or occasional stress.
Metaphysical Properties of Pearl
Beyond its effects on the physical body, pearl is also said to possess spirit-building capabilities and is believed to have many metaphysical properties akin to crystals and gemstones. In particular, pearls have specific frequencies of energy vibrations, which can calm and rebalance deficiencies in the human body when they are worn.
Wearing pearls are said to impart a sense of calmness and centeredness, and to promote faith, loyalty, truth, and purity. They can especially enhance personal integrity. Pearls have also been used in a number of cultures to help women connect with their “inner goddesses” and obtain the ultimate “feminine energy.” It is no surprise that pearls are one of the most feminine types of jewelry a woman can wear.
Tips for harnessing the calming power of pearls:
- Look for high-quality pearl powder and add it to your daily supplement regimen.
- When evaluating a pearl to be worn, look for luster, brilliance, and reflectivity over shape or color. Avoid dull or chalky appearing pearls.
- Care for your pearls by wearing them often, allowing natural body oils to protect the pearl surface. But be sure to protect them from lotions, hairsprays, perfume, and other chemicals.
